Made for Kew Gardens magazine to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Millenium Seed Bank at Wakehurst, Kew’s flagship global conservation project.
Since the project began, Kew have collected more than 2.5 billion seeds from more than 40,000 plant species worldwide, safeguarding them for future generations. The next 25 years will not only keep them protected from deforestation, climate and land use change, but see them used to restore habitats and biodiversity.
My piece includes many flowers inspired by the many endangered uk wildflowers.
Installation at the show “Out of Paper” at Falmouth Art Gallery. Showing from November 2nd 2025 to Jan 26th 2026.
I tied the knot into a pristine, blank piece of beautiful washi paper.
The knot made it difficult to work and create something from it and cut into. I had to work sideways and upside down and with my hand lifted above it in an awkward position. The paper pulled and stretched and strained around the knot. I kept thinking the paper would break and tear. It took me a while to finish and I had to work slowly.
I wouldn’t normally choose to navigate a knot tied into a piece of paper, and everything I did around the knot made it feel more fragile. Any attempts to remove the knot now would tear and break the paper. If I removed the knot, nothing about the work would make sense anymore because the work exists around it and it is part of it.
Tiny celebrations of the small nature that exists around us and is often overlooked. The nature that provides habitats, supports insects, controls erosion and grows around the edges of man made objects, in cracks and reclaims spaces.
